Breast Enhancement (implants)
Breast enhancement is carried out in women who experience discomfort due to their breast size or shape. Subjectively, small breasts are often the source of much insecurity and have a large impact on the sense of self-attractiveness. They also heavily impinge on the satisfaction of intimate life. Thanks to modern implants, it is possible to obtain a satisfactory size and shape. In addition to esthetic and psychological indications for breast enhancement, anatomical hypoplasia or atrophy of the mammary gland following birth may have an effect. Implants are specially formed inserts that are filled with saline or silicone gel. Breasts that are enlarged by gel implants are used more often because of their better, more natural imitation of breast tissue, elimination of the overflowing feeling and the lack of wrinkles at the sides of the breasts. Their popularity is thanks to long-term durability. If no mechanical damages occur, implant exchange will be necessary in 15-20 years. Breast enhancement with this method, aside from the immediate after-effects of surgery, it is relatively safe. There is no scientific evidence that confirms and increased risk of cancer and autoimmune disease after their application. The fact that women with breast implants can breastfeed is equally important.
What types of implants are there?
Thanks to the shape of the inserts, it is possible to obtain different esthetic effects of both, the size and shape of the breasts. The most commonly used implants have the so-called anatomical and round shape.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Breast enhancement surgery requires a physical examination and basic diagnostic tests. During the first visit, the doctor introduces the course of the operation to the patient. Together, they choose the size, type of implant and method of implementation – by cutting into the fold under the breast or via periareolar incision. The patient is also familiarized with the possible risks of breast enlargement using implants.
What to expect during breast enhancement surgery?
The surgery itself takes about two hours and is performed using general anesthesia and requires two day hospitalization. There are several methods of implementing the implant in the breast. The choice is always led by specific anatomy considerations, the expected esthetic effect, implant type and medical grounds. The implants can be implanted under the breast, under pectoralis major or a mix f the two above-mentioned methods. Breast enhancement using implants is associated with temporary pain, swelling and increased or decreased sensitivity of nipples. In the first hours after surgery, pain is prevented by intravenously administered medicaments, and in the next few days, patients receive medicaments prescribed by the doctor. It typically stops being bothersome and hindering for proper functioning after seven days. For several weeks, moving the arms may potentiate the pain – this is a natural occurrence and can be felt in a smaller degree if the patient will avoid sudden movements and physical activity. All of these symptoms gradually disappear with time and healing of surgical wounds.
When can I perform physical activities?
Return to work is not possible sooner than seven days after the operation. It is necessary to wear a special bra during convalescence, and reduce physical activities considerably. Proper care of wounds according to the doctor’s indications is also very important. For quick and problem-free rehabilitation, self observation and paying close attention to problems plays an important role. Pay special attention in the first two weeks. If you experience any disturbing changes, you should immediately contact the doctor that performed the surgery. The vast majority of complications occur during this period and a quick response to them is the basis for the use of appropriate medicaments. Between the second and sixth week, it is crucial to continue to avoid all sports and physical activity. Between the sixth and twelfth weeks after surgery, breasts begin to take proper shape and the scars slowly begin to take on the color of the rest of the body. After one year, the breasts and scars become achieve their final shape and appearance.
